SMT/ATF Episode 14: Italy

Welcome for yet another week to a brand new episode of “Against The Fragmentaire” a series that nobody bothers to read anymore but this doesn’t prevent me from posting it anyways…

It’s been over a month since we left Europe and I can tell you miss these lands already. Ok, I heard you. Italy you want, Italy it is…

One of the very first Italian black metal bands I’ve ever got to listen was Necromass, off their “Mysteria Mystica Zothyriana”, and that was on tape! It’s been 18 years since that day, but still they are the first name that jumps in my head whenever someone mentions Italy and metal…

Onwards to something a bit more contemporary. Absentia Lunae is an extreme black metal band, similar in style to that of Greek NSBM or even French scene, but also baptized in an Italian theatrical polyphony and quite proggy at times…

Another blast from the past, Nocturnal Majesty released an underground jewel and then vanished forever. The whole album is built upon heavy use of synths, and although the production isn’t really helping them, I enjoy their atmosphere from beginning to end…

Graveworm is somewhat mainstream compared to the other bands in this episode. Polished, well written, easy listened blackened gothic metal. Melodic and atmospheric, they sometimes bring in mind the first album of The Gathering. A very good band nonetheless…

With a weird mix of Avant-garde/Black/Gothic/Doom metal, Cultus Sanguine offer a rare and rewarding experience to those who can follow their music. Not the greatest music ever produced, but still an excellent specimen for “Against The Fragmentaire”.

I left my favorite and weirdest for the end. Arcana Coelestia is an eerie avant-garde black metal band that will surely move fans of Anathema, My Dying Bride, Wolves In The Throne Room and Alcest alike… Dive in the darkest dreamscapes with them. They know a way out…

I am moving to a new house so the following weeks *may* be a bit slow for me, but I will try to have something to share. Until the dust settle again, have a great weekend…
